![Image](images/71068880e6cd0c28baca862d0032aff3872fe916856e3c21f00b5625dfdc6854.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 1. Observation of humans using a 2D LRF. Since the LRF observes the environment at a specific height, it captures different parts of the body depending on a person's height.</div>

 $$ x=r\cos\theta\cos\phi $$

---

 $$ y=r\sin\theta\cos\phi $$

 $$ z=h_{s}+r\sin\phi $$

![Image](images/3dc70fde71213da0ed0fed58b185b694d381df1d89836a1c511e0b26adb2264d.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">(a)</div>

![Image](images/012fba3c4a55e19bc5a4b1840262eb4190a058d38c393eddd836516028b1fe9f.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">(b)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 2. Observation by a 3D LiDAR. The 3D LiDAR scans beams in multiple planes, producing sets of 2D scans. (a) Observation by a 3D LiDAR. (b) Example of point clouds projected onto a horizontal plane. Different color indicates the measurement by beams with different elevation angles shown in (a).</div>

 $$ \hat{r}(\theta)=\min_{\phi\in V}r(\theta,\phi)\cos\phi $$

 $$ V=\left\{\phi|\phi\in\Phi\mathrm{a n d}h\cdot r_{o b s}\leq h_{s}+D\sin\phi\leq h\right\} $$

![Image](images/7791e98d68c0edd64afd33246dc0b3478cac12576f9f586091e1b59cbdc6f93b.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 3. Measurement of human height. The target person first stands 2.5 m in front of the robot. Then, the robot measures the person's height using a 3D LiDAR.</div>

当得到观测值 $\hat{r}(\theta_i), i = 1, \ldots, N$ 后，我们计算距离差 $\Delta D_i = |\hat{r}(\theta_i) - \hat{r}(\theta_{i+1})|$，并检测出范围 $[j, k]$，其中对于 $\Delta D_i < D_{th}$、$j \leq i \leq k$ 和 $\Delta D_{j-1} > D_{th}$ 满足 $\Delta D_{k+1} > D_{th}$。

 $$ W=\sqrt{\hat{r}(\theta_{j})^{2}+\hat{r}(\theta_{k})^{2}}-2\hat{r}(\theta_{j})\hat{r}(\theta_{k})\cos(\theta_{k}-\theta_{j}). $$

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 4. Overview of the human detection method. We segment the observation into objects using an LRF based on the measured distances and identify human bodies based on the widths of the objects.</div>

设 $(x(i,t), y(i,t))$ 为t时刻第i个候选在机器人坐标系中的坐标，设 $p(t)$ 为t时刻目标人员在所有候选中的索引。

 $$ \Delta x(i,t)=x(i,t)-x(p(t-1),t-1) $$

 $$ \Delta y(i,t)=y(i,t)-y(p(t-1),t-1) $$

 $$ \mathrm{inarea}(\Delta x,\Delta y)=\left\{\begin{array}{ll}\mathrm{True}&\sqrt{\Delta x^{2}+\Delta y^{2}}<R_{min}\\ \mathrm{False}&\mathrm{otherwise}\end{array}\right. $$

 $$ p(t)=\arg\min_{i}x(i,t)^{2}+y(i,t)^{2}\text{s.t.inarea}(\Delta x(i,t),\Delta y(i,t)) $$

<div style="text-align: center;">Table 1. Specifications of the VLP-16-LITE.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 5. Results of height measurement.</div>

![Image](images/5d8fb67959c18fb6faa8cd68570b0c9d356b942edff1f93fc60c28503da38537.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 6. The robot used in the experiment.</div>

![Image](images/d510075c9db0bac07c13834be406f6f55d9614ee43ed55490f5715781d44b446.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 7. The walking paths used in the experiment. We used a straight path (upper figure) and a circular path (lower figure).</div>

![Image](images/080301a8f9d00744b8fdd12bfb209c29e88525193d79b3e06eecdb1c9d9bded0.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">(b)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 8. Estimation results of human width (Participant 2). (a) Straight path. (b) Circular path.</div>

![Image](images/6857b2c414044a4a7a45d3f40922b0a1b1d2f748ea1b9b8c0fb73821dec8ef50.jpg)

<div style="text-align: center;">(b)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 9. Distribution of human widths. (a) Straight path. (b) Circular path.</div>

<table border=1 style='margin: auto; word-wrap: break-word;'><tr><td style='text-align: center; word-wrap: break-word;'>Ratio</td><td style='text-align: center; word-wrap: break-word;'>Mean [m]</td><td style='text-align: center; word-wrap: break-word;'>Standard Dev.

<div style="text-align: center;">Figure 15. Examples of point clouds of walking people. We can see that the arms are included in the point cloud of the human and misdetected as the body when the entire point cloud is projected. These misdetections can be avoided by using 30% of the point cloud.</div>
